Program for Boxing Coaches (BFI) – Boxing Technique

1. Understanding Boxing Technique

  • Technique refers to the specific way a physical exercise or skill is performed.
  • A model technique is:
    • A widely accepted standard of perfect execution.
    • Biomechanically sound and physiologically efficient.
    • Aimed at achieving high efficiency.
  • Technique ≠ Style:
    • Style is the individual’s unique pattern of performing a skill.
    • Even a champion’s technique may not represent the ideal model to emulate.

2. Boxing Stance and Footwork

Footwork Types:

  1. Plain steps
  2. Pivots / Side-steps
  3. Pendulum steps
  4. Diagonal steps

3. Punches

Punches are categorized by type and target area (head or body), and can be thrown with either hand.

Types of Punches:

  1. Straight Punches
    • Left: to head / to body
    • Right: to head / to body
  2. Uppercuts
    • Left: to head / to body
    • Right: to head / to body
  3. Hooks
    • Left: to head / to body
    • Right: to head / to body
  • Combination punching and punching while moving are also essential components of offensive technique.

4. Defensive Techniques

Defensive skills are taught immediately after learning each corresponding punch.

Defense Categories:

A. With the Feet:

  • Step backward
  • Lateral step (left or right)
  • Pivots / Side-steps
    • Clockwise
    • Anti-clockwise

B. With the Hands and Arms:

  • Catching:
    • With left hand
    • With right hand
  • Parrying:
    • Using left forearm
    • Using right forearm
    • Using shoulder
  • Blocking:
    • Left glove/arm
    • Right glove/arm
    • Double block (both arms)

C. With the Trunk / Upper Body:

  • Slipping:
    • To the left
    • To the right
  • Sway back
  • Ducking:
    • Left
    • Right
    • Downward

5. Counterpunching

  • Direct Counter: Immediate offensive response without prior defense.
  • Counter-attack: Offensive action executed after a defensive maneuver.

6. Fighting Distances

  1. Long Distance: One or more steps away from the opponent.
  2. Medium Distance: Within punching range.
  3. Short Distance: In physical contact with the opponent.

7. Feinting and Drawing

Used to deceive or provoke reactions from the opponent.

  • Feinting methods:
    • With the arms
    • With the upper body and eyes
    • With the feet
  • Drawing: Intentionally creating openings to lure the opponent into attacking.

8. Training Methods

Without Gloves:

  • School Boxing: Fundamental drills focusing on form and technique.
  • Shadow Boxing: Practicing punches, footwork, and defense without a partner.

With Gloves:

  • School Fight: Structured, technique-focused sparring.
  • Controlled Sparring: Limited-intensity sparring with specific objectives.
  • Free Sparring: Open, realistic practice simulating actual combat.
